# Set up channels

> Turn on each sales surface for a merchant, starting with in-store kiosks.

A **channel** is the surface a customer uses to order — your app, website, kiosk, call center, or a marketplace such as Uber Eats. It is not a store. Stores are the locations that prepare the order; channels are the paths customers use to place it.

Read [Channels](https://firespark.cloud/docs/concepts/channels.md) if you want the full model. This guide is the setup path in the dashboard.

## Before you start

You need:

* A Fire spark account and access to the [dashboard](https://firespark.cloud/dashboard)
* An organization and a merchant already created
* Permission to view and edit that merchant’s channels

If **Channels** does not appear for the merchant, ask an admin to grant access.

## Create a channel

**1. Open the merchant**

In the dashboard, select the organization, then open the merchant that will sell on this surface.

**2. Go to Channels**

Open **Channels**. The list is grouped by type (App, Web, Kiosk, and so on).

**3. Add a channel**

Create a new channel. Give it a name your team will recognize, such as `In-store kiosk`.

**4. Choose the type**

Set **Type** to the surface you are launching. You cannot change the type later. If you pick the wrong one, create a new channel.

**5. Save and open the channel**

After you save, the channel appears in the list. A kiosk channel opens the kiosk hub. Other types open the channel record.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Type is fixed after creation because each surface has different settings. A
> kiosk needs tablet enrollment; a web channel does not.

## Setup guides by channel

Each owned channel will have its own setup guide. Kiosk is first because tablets need a Google Play connection before you can enroll devices or publish the private app.
