# Custom rules

> Use product and category tags to drive advanced custom rules in Fire spark.

Custom rules let you act on structured `tags` from menu sync — for example routing, promotions, or channel-specific behavior that goes beyond Dashboard filters.

While this guide is in progress, send optional `tags` on products and categories in [Upsert menus](/docs/integrations-api/menus/put). Prefer `labels` when you only need filters and quick selection in the Dashboard. See [Labels and tags](/docs/integrations-api/guides/menu-sync#labels-and-tags) in the menu sync guide.
